Get More for Less: The Rise of Pre-Owned Electronics

Based on historical accounts, the consumer electronics industry got its start more than a century ago. Of course, technology has evolved a great deal since those early days, hasn’t it? Over the last 125 years, we’ve transitioned from phonographs, radios with vacuum tubes, and televisions with CRTs to LED or OLED televisions, digital and online radio technology, and the ever-growing range of IoT and AI-powered devices.

There’s little denying that a vast majority of consumers are constantly chomping at the bit to get their hands on the latest electronics these days. Considering how much life has changed at this point, some of those devices could be considered more necessities than luxuries. Still, brand-new electronics aren’t the only options available. Over the last decade, the demand for pre-owned electronics has been on a steady uptick, and companies like Plug are fostering this movement. What’s behind the rise of pre-owned electronics? Several factors come into play here.

Cost-Effectiveness

As you might imagine, one of the main reasons why so many people are trending toward pre-owned electronics rather than new ones is their cost-effectiveness. Though the majority of people want the latest phones, smartwatches, laptops, tablets, and other devices, they’re definitely not in everyone’s budget. Previously owned and refurbished models give them what they’re looking for at a much more affordable price. That makes them more accessible to the people who need, or simply want, them. Cost is only one factor to consider, though.

Increased Availability

At the same time, pre-owned electronics are becoming more widely available. Once manufacturers and retailers saw there was a growing market for them, they realized there were benefits in catering to the demand. Furthermore, people now have the option of selling or trading in their devices when they want to upgrade to newer models, and those devices are being refurbished rather than discarded. Those factors have have led to a continually growing and expanding selection of used electronics.

Improved Quality and Assurance

Not very long ago, people who were looking for pre-owned electronics had few options other than buying them from their previous owners and hoping they actually worked the way they were supposed to. Now, numerous reputable suppliers are offering certified refurbished electronics that come with warranties and other marks of quality. Today’s pre-owned market is far less risky for consumers.

Environmental Considerations

Finally, more people than ever before are mindful of the impacts they, and all of humanity, have on the planet. According to recent reports, e-waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams. More than 68 million tons of electronic waste were generated during the last year for which information is available, and that number is projected to surge in the years to come. Less than a quarter of that waste is recycled. Buying pre-owned is an effective way to reduce e-waste and its environmental impacts. Though there will always be a demand for new electronics, buying used can help balance the scales.

Purchasing Pre-Owned Electronics

Electronics have become an integral part of our lives at this point. They’re found in every home and business, and they’re going to grow even more common in the future. Not everyone can afford the latest tech, but pre-owned devices can give them the features and conveniences they want for a more manageable price. Additionally, refurbished devices are becoming more readily available and more reputable while also helping to reduce the impact of the growing electronics market on the planet.
